  • There is always something soaking or sprouting in our kitchen. 🌱

Ayurveda thrives on prevention and nutritional therapy supports a healthy digestive system where most all dis-ease begins. Easily digestible foods are key!

Legumes, grains, nuts and seeds defense mechanism is their outer layer. Soaking, sprouting and even dry roasting your nuts and seeds helps to break down the food and anti-nutrients and removes the phytic acid that causes digestive issues. This means your digestive system has less work to do. This can increase your absorption up to 90% and provide a pre-biotic environment!

SOAKING
Nuts can be soaked for 2-6 hours, while beans, grains and seeds are best soaked for 8-12 hours. Simply place them in a bowl of filtered water before you go to bed and rinse them and cook or start sprouting them the following morning. Or, begin soaking in the morning to cook later in the evening.

If you have any digestive issues, simply soak your grains and legumes overnight.

SPROUTING
Soak in a wide-mouth mason jar covered with a cheese cloth secured with a rubber band or a sprouting lid. After soaking, strain and rinse and let the sprouts sit at room temperature for a few days, rinsing at least twice a day until you can see sprouts growing! Cook right away or store in the fridge until ready to cook. Foods will sprout faster in the warmer months and slower in the cooler seasons.

Happy Sprouting 🌱 Healthy DigestionπŸ™ŒπŸ»

  • M E D I T A T I O N πŸ’« When I travel I bring my travel yoga mat and usually some gemstones, incense or small special pieces from my home meditation space.

Bringing a few familiar pieces from home supports you to stay grounded and stable during travel which vitiates the vata dosha. For me, it also serves as a visual reminder to stay with my daily practice.

On this trip I remembered my mat but forgot everything else πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ so, I bought this incense holder and I was SUPER excited I found this cute little Buddha πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ statue in our #vrbo and have been doing my #yinyoga #pranayama and #meditation practice here every morning. πŸ™πŸ»
.
But of course, you need nothing to sit in meditation. You could sit with the blue sky, green grass or even a dried up leaf.
.
How do you stay grounded while you travel?

  • The moon πŸŒ™ is the goddess of water. Water is the nectar that interacts with the other elements and is considered the mother of all tastes.
.
Every medicinal herb and food substance has a specific taste the moment it hits your tongue (if your tongue is dry, you can’t taste accurately). Each taste; sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent, and pungent is made up of the five elements of nature: air, either, fire, water and earth.
.
The SWEET taste is made up of EARTH 🌎 and WATER πŸ’¦ and gives us strength, longevity and vital essence. It balances the vata and pitta doshas and has qualities that are cooling and usually heavy. Examples: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, mint, honey.
.
The sweet taste improves our skin, complexion, reduces inflammation, and promotes the growth of plasma, blood, muscles, fat, bone, marrow and reproductive tissue. If you have inflamed, red, burning skin or are challenged by a rash or acne, eat melon and then rub the rinds over your skin for immediate relief.
.
As we move into the pitta season β˜€οΈ consider adding fresh mint 🌿 to your sweet fruit. And remember, fruit makes a great snack! All fruit should be taken away from meals, never combined with other foods as fruit gets digested first and can cause other foods to putrefy and create malabsorption, digestive imbalances and ama, toxins. .
