Is Ayurveda against leftovers?

This is a question I hear often from clients.

Especially those who work in an office and want to start bringing healthier lunches to work.

It is true that fresh food has the most prana, or life force energy.

The longer food sits (even in the fridge), the less prana it has and the more tamasic (heavy + hard to digest) it becomes.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t meal prep!

I talk a LOT about meal prep in consults, and I’ve personalized solutions for everyone from:

  • cooking for one
  • big families
  • having a partner who is a different dosha (like me!)

My approach is less about rigid rules and more about mindful choices.

So, here are a few tips for how to meal prep and prepare leftovers for maximum prana.

🌿Prep ghee, dressings, or chutneys on the weekends when you have more time
🌿Pre-mix kitchadi – just add water and cook!
🌿Cook a simple broth (option to freeze) and add cooked lentils and vegetables when ready to eat

If you do eat leftovers:

🌿Store them in glass
🌿Keep for a max of 36 hours
🌿Add something fresh – like greens, a squeeze of fresh lemon, or herbs
🌿When possible, use a thermos or reheat on the stove (vs. a microwave)
🌿Add black pepper to enhance bioavailability

But first, a note on how Ayurveda thinks about Menopause. Menopause has been framed as a loss in our culture—loss of youth, fertility, vitality. And because of that, so many women brace themselves for the worst: hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, exhaustion, anxiety, and changes that feel out of
