The Importance of the Koshas

Most people come to Ayurveda hoping food or herbs will fix their symptoms, but 80% of my consultations end up being about the subtle body, where real imbalances often hide.

Ever noticed how when you’re stressed, physical symptoms also appear? Maybe your digestion flares up. Your skin breaks out. You struggle with sleep. Your cycle gives you trouble.

Ayurveda doesn’t separate the mind, body, and energy. Instead, it sees them as one continuous field, built up in layers. In Ayurveda, we’re made up of five layers, called the koshas. Understanding them helps us see where imbalance is showing up and how to bring it back into harmony.

A quick Kosha Overview:

Kosha Also known as the… When out of balance (examples)
Annamaya Physical body Fatigue, pain, poor digestion
Pranamaya Energy body Anxiety, shallow breath, burnout
Manomaya Mental/emotional body Overthinking, worry, irritability
Vijnanamaya Wisdom body Confusion, lack of clarity, ignoring gut or intuition
Anandamaya Bliss body Lack of contentment, disconnection from one’s purpose, always on the pursuit of something outside of one’s Self

Recently a client came in with gas and bloating.

We identified an imbalance in her Praṇamaya kosha (her energy layer). By focusing on eating in a sattvic environment, taking deep breathes and not eating distracted, her energy began to return. This was also why only changing the food she was eating wasn’t enough. This wasn’t going deep enough into the koshas.

When imbalance penetrates deeper layers, it becomes harder to heal through the physical body alone. That’s why Ayurveda works on every level (body, energy, mind, and spirit) so we can restore balance from the inside out.

If diet and lifestyle changes haven’t brought lasting relief, it may be time to look a little deeper. Book an Ayurvedic consultation, and we’ll help you understand where imbalance is living so the deep healing can begin!
