My favorite herbal alternatives for popular OTC medications

Over-the-counter medications can offer quick relief…

But some OTC medications have negative side effects associated with long-term use.

So, check out this list of my favorite swaps I use from my own herbal medicine cabinet.

Before you dive into the list…

I highly recommend working with an Ayurvedic practitioner to address lifestyle, nutrition, and custom-created herbal formulations that are personalized to your underlying root issue.

However, I hope this list can inspire you to opt for a natural alternative whenever it makes sense and is available!

For acid reflux:

Instead of PPIs, I love using herbs that kindle digestive fire to support better overall digestion of food.

🌿Licorice Root
🌿Holy basil
🌿Aloe Vera
🌿CCF Tea (cumin, coriander, fennel)

For pain + inflammation:

Rather than taking ibuprofen, I try to reduce inflammation with herbs like:

🌿Turmeric
🌿Ginger
🌿Moringa
🌿Ashwagandha

For allergies:

Ayurveda sees allergies as a sign of excess ama (or toxins) and a sensitive immune response. Here’s how I support the clearing of ama and my lungs/sinuses:

🌿Triphala
🌿Ginger
🌿Trikatu
🌿Nettle
🌿Goldenseal
🌿Echinacea
🌿Mullein

For sleep:

Sleep issues are often rooted in excess Vata or overstimulated nervous systems. I love adding these to my nighttime rituals:

🌿Brahmi
🌿Ashwagandha
🌿Warm milk spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon
🌿Lavender
🌿Frankincense

For gas & bloat:

A poor digestive fire is often the culprit, and these herbs help strengthen the agni to reduce discomfort and indigestion:

🌿Triphala
🌿Ginger
🌿Cumin
🌿Fennel

Losing weight around your Vata region

If you’re not losing weight around your Vata region (abdomen and thighs) despite cutting calories and increasing movement…there’s a reason! SO many clients come to me feeling exhausted by this rhetoric. I know you’ve heard it before: Calories in < calories out = weight loss. If only weight loss was

Ayurvedic Guide: How to eat for Menopause

But first, a note on how Ayurveda thinks about Menopause. Menopause has been framed as a loss in our culture—loss of youth, fertility, vitality.
