The Ayurvedic Perspective on High Protein Diets

High protein diets are hot right now, but are they right for you?

Protein is the *it* word right now in many of my consultations. High protein recipes are super trendy, and I get a lot of clients asking how this fits into Ayurveda.

The Ayurvedic take on protein:
In Ayurveda, there’s more to protein than grams or macros. Instead, we understand food through the six tastes + how it interacts with our digestion, energy, and overall constitution.

Protein-rich foods often carry the sweet taste.

The sweet taste is grounding and nourishing. However, in excess, it can contribute to heaviness, sluggish digestion, and even congestion (especially for Kapha types or those with weak agni!).

Your protein cravings can tell us a lot about your digestion.

If you’re not naturally craving protein (or if you feel sluggish after eating it) it could be a sign that your digestion needs support.

Not everyone needs the same amount (or source) of protein.

Different Dosha types (or imbalances) need different amounts of protein, and there are different sources for each type, as well.

For example, some clients do really well with nuts as a protein source, while it can be too oily and heavy for others.

The bottom line:

Trends come and go, but Ayurveda has been around for thousands of years.

It works because every treatment plan is tailored to the unique needs of each individual body.
