Basti Therapies: Ancient Healing for Modern Wellness

The realm of Ayurveda is vast and endlessly fascinating. Its depth is such that one could dedicate a lifetime to studying it and still uncover new layers of understanding. After all, Ayurveda is often referred to as the “science of life” for good reason.

Charlie and I had the privilege of immersing ourselves in a week of intensive learning alongside my dear friend and colleague, Madison, who owns her own Ayurvedic Clinic in Denver, CO. We were joined by another colleague, Jennifer, acupuncturist, who heavily weaves Ayurveda into her practice. Together, the four of us delved into the intricacies of Ayurvedic practices, exchanging client testimonials, successes, and challenges. Our focus centered particularly on the administration of Basti therapies, and Udvartana, ancient Ayurvedic treatments celebrated for their profound healing effects.

Basti, deriving from the Sanskrit word meaning “bladder” or “vessel,” serves as a profound tool in Ayurvedic therapy. In a localized basti or vasti, warm herbal oil or ghee is contained within a pool atop a specific marma point or region of the body. This nurturing practice acts as a targeted marma therapy, reducing excess vata in a hyperlocal area.

The therapies we explored include:

  • Janu Basti: Targeting the knee joints
  • Greeva Basti: Focusing on the neck and cervical spine
  • Kati Basti: Addressing the lower back, sacrum, and lumbar spine
  • Nahbi Basti: Centered around the umbilicus
  • Hrid Basti: Engaging both the physical and emotional heart
  • Netra Basti: Attending to the health of the eyes

Benefits of basti Therapy:

Basti therapies offer a holistic approach to wellness, addressing physical, emotional, and energetic imbalances with profound efficacy.

  • Pain Relief: warm herbal oils soothe discomfort, reduce inflammation, and promote flexibility in targeted areas of the body.
  • Emotional Balance: nurture emotional well-being, fostering feelings of calm, release from grief, anxiety, and anger, as well as relaxation and inner peace.
  • Detoxification: Gentle cleansing and nourishment support the body’s natural detoxification processes, promoting overall health and vitality.

I am so honored to be adding this therapy to serve our community in experiencing the transformative benefits of these ancient healing modalities. Whether you seek relief from physical discomfort, emotional balance, or simply a renewed sense of well-being, we are here to support you on your journey to optimal health.❤️

Ayurvedic Guide: How to eat for Menopause

But first, a note on how Ayurveda thinks about Menopause. Menopause has been framed as a loss in our culture—loss of youth, fertility, vitality.
